Interior Latex Paint
Interior Latex Paint is a comedy about youth, creativity, and sexuality. It centers around two 17-year-olds, Junior and Samantha. Both have lived their lives in constant communication. They speak through computers, cell phones, video, slides, sex, painting, journals, forums, and message boards. Representing a generation with all the tools to communicate and nothing to say; they talk through the night before arriving at their own conclusions.
The play has three sets: Junior’s room, Samantha’s room, and a multimedia screen. The production moves from set to set with simultaneous action. Transitions are either physically controlled by the characters or electronically controlled by the media wall.
The play opens as Junior contacts Samantha through instant message, phone, and window. For the remainder of the night, they travel between bedrooms. Via video projection and their own conversations, we see their intertwined past. Samantha has been creating her own art for years, and we see much of her work. Junior has helped but not taken any creative steps of his own. Even his room remains trapped in infancy. By the end of the evening, the two childhood friends look forward to their adult lives and their adult relationship.
